Butterfly Conservation Cheshire and Peak District Branch

Objectives

Butterfly Conservation is the UK charity working towards a world where butterflies and moths can thrive for future generations to enjoy.

The Cheshire and Peak District Branch was established in 1985 with the aim of promoting the conservation of butterflies, moths and their habitats in Cheshire and the Peak District. The area covered comprises the whole of Cheshire with Warrington, Halton, Wirral on the Cheshire borders and Greater Manchester with North Derbyshire making up bulk of the Peak District.

The branch promotes conservation through direct conservation action, recording, and through extensive liaisons with other conservation bodies active in Cheshire and the Peak District.

Other branch activities include a programme of summer field trips to sites of interest and in the winter work parties are organised to assist conservation management.

Within the past few years survey work conducted by members has contributed to three important publications, "The Butterflies of Cheshire" in 1999, the "Millennium Atlas of Butterflies in Britain and Ireland" in 2001 and "The State of Butterflies in Britain and Ireland" in 2006.

Butterflies are excellent indicators of environmental quality and their conservation is intimately related to the preservation of all our flora and fauna. Through branch activities Butterfly Conservation aims to help reverse the decline of our butterfly and moth heritage and support the restoration of a healthy and balanced environment.
