Where to see: Limestone grassland and moorland

Behaviour: Patrol

Wingspan: 58-68mm

Caterpillar food plant: Violets (Viola spp.)

Cheshire status: Regularly bred on the Wirral in the mid-1800’s with no evidence of when this ceased. Last confirmed breeding in the county was in mid-Cheshire in the 1940’s. A few individuals are still recorded almost annually, but refer to wanderers from breeding sites in adjacent counties, with the majority being seen from late July to early August.
