Where to see: Hedgerows, scrubby woodland

Behaviour: Perch

Wingspan: 37-48mm

Caterpillar food plant: Grasses such as Bents and Fescues

Cheshire status: An abundant and widespread resident. In the 1930’s this butterfly was virtually unknown on the Cheshire Plain, but a range expansion has been underway since that time which seems to have accelerated since the early 1980’s. In the last few years breeding colonies have even become established in the Pennine foothills. Single-brooded flying throughout July and August.

Note: This butterfly is also known as the Hedge Brown.
