Silver-studded Blue (Plebeius argus) caterpillar
  Silver-studded Blue Caterpillar with Ants

The caterpillar attract ants by emitting a pheromone (a scent) and also excretes a sugary solution, that the ants drink. In return the ants help to protect the caterpillar from predators like spiders and other insects.

The chrysalis is usually found on the ground in the leaf litter near ant nests. It has also been found in black ant nests, where the ants continue to protect it.
